Early on Davenport Neck the fog comes in off Long Island Sound and sits in the yards until the sun burns it back toward the water. Sammy's Landscaping starts the day in that grey hour, when the grass is still heavy and the first pass of the mower lays down a dark stripe behind it. This is lawn care in a city of tucked-away streets: mowing, edging along the bluestone, trimming the corners a machine can't reach, and clearing off what the cut leaves behind. By the time the harbor turns bright, the lawns on the Neck are lined and squared and the walks are bare again. It's a small thing to hand somebody at the end of a day, a yard that looks the way they hoped it would.
