The first cut of the year in New City lands on some unpredictable April afternoon, once the ground has firmed up and the grass has quietly gotten ahead of everyone. The Turf Lab starts there — spring cleanup first, then the weekly mowing, trimming and edging that carries all the way to the leaves coming down. Yards here sit between the ridges and the western shelf above the Hudson, and they wake at slightly different times depending on which way they face. Watching a winter-flat lawn stand back up over three or four cuts is one of the better parts of the job. New City, Congers and Valley Cottage, from that first April pass onward.
