The Esopus turns hard at Mount Tremper, and the mountain that shares the name holds the hamlet in early shadow no matter the month. J&G Property Maintenance works both halves of the year here — mowing and trimming the yards along 28 and the lanes toward Chichester in summer, edging the walks, clearing the beds in spring and again in fall. Winter is plows and shovels: driveways opened, steps scraped down, sand laid where the shade keeps ice into the afternoon. Catskill weather does not negotiate, and a place that gets attention in both seasons never falls far behind. A cut lawn by the creek in July and a bare driveway in February are the same pleasure wearing different clothes.
