By late May the Bronx River Parkway reservation has closed over into a long green tunnel, and every lawn in Mount Pleasant is growing faster than anyone can quite keep up with. That surge is where Alphabet Landscaping and Maintenance does its best thinking: which yards need cutting first, which shaded strips can wait a week, where the mower has to slow for a root or a slope. Maintenance is a patient art in a town this leafy — the same properties, the same turns, week after week, each visit leaving the place a little tidier than the last. There is real satisfaction in a mown yard on a June evening, stripes still visible, walks swept clean, nothing left behind but the smell of cut grass. Cleanups bracket the season at both ends, hauling winter's debris out in April and the maples' surrender out in November.
