The old rail line still runs north from Milford toward Cooperstown, and by late summer the grass grows right up to the ballast on both sides of it. Granite State Scoopers mows the lawns nearby on a set weekly turn, trimming fence lines and edging where a drive meets the yard. Thunder builds over the western hills often enough that the route gets run in whatever order the sky allows. There is something plainly good about a mown lawn at dusk, the smell of it, the lines holding, the whole yard gone quiet. Milford, Portlandville, Oneonta and Otego.
