The hills above Mayfield hold their snow, and the driveways winding back to camps and hillside houses can take a hundred yards of pushing before the truck ever sees a door. Baldwin Excavation runs those routes all winter — plowing driveways and lots, opening long private lanes, stacking banks back where they won't blind a corner, sanding the grades that ice first. Squalls come off Great Sacandaga with almost no warning, and the foothills add their own on top of that. Walks and entryways get cleared so nobody has to guess at the last ten feet. There is nothing quite like a lane opened wall to wall at five in the morning, headlights running all the way out to the road.
