Snow that starts over Lake Erie is still falling by the time it reaches the hills at Machias, and by four in the morning the Lime Lake road has a new floor laid on it. Maggio Construction is out in that hour, plowing drives and camp lanes down to gravel before anyone else has thought about the day. Banks get cut back clean at the sides so the next storm has somewhere to go and the lane keeps its width into March. A cleared drive at first light, steaming a little in the cold, is the whole point of getting up. The route runs the lake road and out toward Arcade and Franklinville.
