Ischua Creek runs the length of the valley at Machias, and the flat ground beside it is where most of the lawns are. American Curbing mows and trims through the green half of the year, and the pleasure in that work is the boundary — the place where grass stops and pavement starts, made deliberate rather than accidental. When the hills whiten, the same drives get plowed and pushed out to the shoulder so nothing narrows week by week. Walks are shoveled and treated where the shade holds on to ice.
