Winter arrives in Lowville off Tug Hill, which hands the Black River valley its snow by the foot rather than the inch. Miller's Turf answers that with plow work in the small hours — driveways, farm lanes and walkways opened while the barn lights are still the only lights on the road, and salt down before the first tires roll. Come May the same ground turns green fast and hungry, and the work becomes mowing, trimming and cleanup across the dairy country. There is a particular satisfaction in a yard cut straight along a valley that spent five months white. Both halves of the year here are about the same thing: making a place passable, then making it handsome.
