Out on the Louisville flats the wind has nothing to lean against, so a squall off the river will build a drift anywhere a fence line gives it an excuse. Snow Pass Plowing spends those afternoons cutting drives back to their full width, then coming again once the blow has finished rearranging things. Walks get shoveled down until the steps show their edges, and the mailbox end of the drive gets opened wide enough for the carrier to swing in. It is honest work with a visible result: bare pavement in a white field, and a house that can get where it needs to go. The plow travels the Coles Creek roads and on toward Massena and Madrid.
