At three in the morning the St. Lawrence is a black seam beyond the fields, and the only lights moving in Louisville belong to plows. Granacker Excavation runs the long farm lanes and county-road drives at that hour, pushing back whatever the night piled up so the first trip out can be a straight one. Some mornings the river throws a fine grit of ice across the grade, and sand goes down where the slope would rather not be argued with.
