East of Lockport the canal villages come one after another — Gasport, then Middleport — and in October the whole run of them turns gold and then bare inside of three weeks. Shawns Yardcare and Snowplowing rides that changeover: mowing, trimming and edging until the grass quits, cleanups through the leaf drop, then plowing, shoveling and salting once the first real storm lands. Out along those flat roads the wind has nothing to slow it down, and the snow piles up wherever it pleases. Getting a drive open on a morning like that feels less like a chore than a favor done for a neighbor. Then April comes, the mowers roll out, and the loop closes again.
