Come August the fairgrounds at Little Valley fill up and the whole valley smells like cut grass and fried dough. James Ruper Landscaping is part of what makes the town look ready — mowing, trimming, edging, spring and fall cleanups — and then, months later, plowing, clearing walks and steps, and salting through the long Cattaraugus winter. Snow in these hills does not visit; it moves in and stays on until April. Between storms there is real satisfaction in a driveway banked neatly on both sides, wide enough to turn around in. Two seasons, one set of properties, looked after the whole way.
