Four in the morning on a county road out past Model City: no traffic, no light, just the plow's beam and eight inches that fell while the town slept. Z and C Lawn Care Service is out in it, opening driveways and lots, clearing walks by shovel and laying salt on the slick spots so nobody starts a day on ice. When the ground softens they turn to grass — mowing on a regular schedule, trimming corners and posts, cutting the drive line back in, and clearing yards front to back in spring and fall. A summer lawn and a winter driveway are the same promise made twice. Both are judged from the street, and both get finished.
