About A & R Superior

Four in the morning in Le Ray, wind off Lake Ontario, Tug Hill letting go of another foot before daylight — that is the hour A & R Superior is out in it. Plows push the driveways open, shovels finish the walks down to the step, and salt goes down where the wind has packed the ice hard. North country winters do not negotiate; they simply keep arriving, and the answer is to be up ahead of them. There is a plain pleasure in a drive opened while the house is still dark, so the first person out the door finds it done. Storm after storm, that is the whole job.
