Out along Genesee Street the town thins into field edges, and on a June evening the smell of cut grass carries a quarter mile. Heerdt's Lawn Care works into that last hour of light — deck down, straight passes, the trimmer finishing what a mower cannot reach along posts and the ditch line. Lawns on the open side of Lancaster take more sun and more wind than the village ones do, so they get watched and cut to suit. The work is repetitive by design; that is the only way a property looks the same good way in August that it did in May. Dusk here rewards anyone still outside for it.
