Cayuga Creek runs quiet under the bridges of Lancaster, and the yards above it hold the long green of an Erie County July. Captain's Lawn Service LLC mows those lawns and trims them close — the shaded lots near the village, the wide fronts out toward Depew, the strips of grass edging a hundred driveways. A line cut straight down a big front yard is worth standing back to look at, and so is a sidewalk edge so sharp it looks ruled. Spring arrives here damp and all at once; October drops maple leaves in drifts against the fences, and both get raked and hauled until the turf can breathe again. It is plain outdoor work, week after week, on the lawns of one town along the creek.
