When the last of the summer traffic leaves Lake George, the village belongs to winter. The lake gives off steam on the coldest mornings, Prospect Mountain stands white above the rooftops, and the snow comes in off the Adirondacks with nothing to slow it down. Lake George Park Construction works those nights, plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks and entries, shoveling steps, and salting the slick spots that form where wind has scoured a surface bare. Rolling through a dark village and leaving one clean drive after another behind you, before anyone is awake, is how winter gets done here. A lakeside winter is lovely from a window and a great deal of work from the seat of a truck.
