Some winter days in Lacona the snow is less a forecast than an address: one narrow band off Lake Ontario parked over the village, coming down hard at noon while the sun shines a few miles to either side. Coffin's Gravel & Excavating works inside that band, turning a gravel and excavating outfit's machinery on the snow: driveways plowed out, and the heavy windrow the road plow leaves at the end of the drive broken through and shoved aside. Lake-effect snow out here can stack up faster than a shovel can follow, so the banks get built tall and wide of the drive, leaving space for when the band drifts back. A business built on moving gravel understands weight and footing, and you can see it in a drive left level and passable rather than merely scraped. When the band finally lifts and the sun returns, the open drive is the first dark line in a white world.
