On the north side of Jamestown the houses sit close and the driveways run long and narrow back to garages built for smaller cars. J North Services knows those tight lines, mowing the strips of yard between them in summer, trimming along fences and foundations, edging where lawn meets concrete, and carrying off the clippings and leaves before they mat down. In winter the same narrow runs are the difficulty: plowing what fits, shoveling what does not, salting the walk and the back step where shade holds the ice all day.
