Out toward Busti the land opens into long hayfields and the light runs farther than it does in town, which is why the mowing days start early and finish with the sun still up. Bustimowers&more cuts and trims yards along those roads and back into Jamestown proper, holding a tight edge where lawn meets gravel drive and clearing the beds out when spring and fall turn the calendar. Then the hayfields go white and the same roads drift shut between the windbreaks. Plowing, shoveling, salting: the truck is out while the fields are still blue-dark, and the drives are open by breakfast.
