Lake Erie writes the winters here. A band sets up to the northwest, thickens as it crosses the ridge, and then all night the snow comes sideways in a way that fills a Jamestown driveway twice before morning. Bush Trimmers works inside those hours, plowing drives and lots, breaking open the hard bank that piles at the foot of an apron, shoveling steps and walks, laying salt where meltwater will refreeze by dawn. The measure of a night is a car that backs out without hesitating and a mail carrier who never has to guess where the walk is. Storm after storm, that is the whole ambition.
