Italy is hill country — Italy Hill, Italy Valley, the West River running down toward Canandaigua Lake between slopes of hemlock and old pasture. Aviano Lawn Care mows the long, uneven yards out here, where a lawn is often a half-acre of open sky with a treeline at the end of it and the mower has to know the ground before it commits to it. Summer mornings come up cool in the valley and burn off by nine; that is the window, and the work fits into it. By late September the hillsides turn and the season shifts to cleanups — leaves off the grass, borders trimmed back, everything squared away before the wind starts coming over the ridge in earnest. It is a small town spread across a lot of country, and getting to all of it is part of the job.
