About Fred C Johnson & Son Inc.

Hornell sits in a bowl of hills, and snow that begins on the ridges above Arkport comes down into the Maple City with the wind pushing it along. Fred C Johnson & Son Inc. runs plows through those nights — driveways, lots, and the long approaches out to the valley roads — clearing them before the first shift heads in. Piles get pushed well back instead of left where they will melt and refreeze across the pavement, and sand goes down wherever a grade turns slick. There is a particular quiet in a cleared lot at five in the morning, headlights sweeping black asphalt with white walls stacked along the edges. Storm after storm, the job is to make Hornell passable at the hour it needs to be.
