Hoosick Falls is named for what the river does here — the Hoosic drops, gathers itself and keeps going, loud enough in a wet spring to hear from the middle of the village. Artesian Gardens tends the ground above that water: mowing the stepped yards on the hill streets, trimming close along foundations and picket lines, keeping beds turned and clean. April work is all clearing, winter sand raked out and matted grass opened so it can breathe; November work is leaves, and plenty of them. What carries through is attention — a border that holds its line, a lawn cut at the right height for the week it is in. This is a village where people notice their neighbors' yards, which is a good reason to do them right.
