Water has always shaped this stretch of the Island: the Mill River slips out of Hempstead Lake and runs south toward the bays, and the ground in between lets a rainfall go almost as fast as it arrives. ADV Irrigation & Landscape Design works with that fact instead of arguing with it. In April they walk a yard zone by zone, charging the lines, watching each head rise, twisting the arc until spray lands on grass and not on the driveway. The design half is the same instinct aimed at the whole property, with beds shaped, plantings set in place and the lawn given a form it can hold. When the year turns cold they clear the lines ahead of the first hard freeze, and the system sleeps until the forsythia says otherwise.
