Snow arrives in Hector on a wind that has just crossed Seneca Lake, and it arrives with opinions. Hector Logging is a snow removal outfit built for the hillside roads above that water, where a driveway can pitch down toward Route 414 fast enough to make a January morning interesting. Blades go out before the vineyard rows are visible, working the ridge lanes near the Finger Lakes National Forest and the pull-offs down by Hector Falls. There is a plain satisfaction in coming back at first light and finding dark, clean pavement where a foot of squall used to be. Salt goes where the grade asks for it, not everywhere. The lake will send more; the drives will be open.
