Out past Silver Creek the vineyards run in long rows toward Lake Erie, and for a couple of weeks each fall the whole town of Hanover smells like grapes. McMillan's Landscaping of WNY tends lawns in that lake-plain country, where Walnut Creek and the Cattaraugus cut down through the flats and the growing season stretches a little longer than it has any right to. Mowing, trimming, edging, beds mulched and leaves moved off before the water turns gray — it adds up to a property that reads as looked-after from the road. Mornings here start soft and hazy off the lake, which is a fine hour to be cutting grass. Plain work with a visible result, which is the point of it.
