The morning after a lake-effect night, the flat country toward Sterling looks rebuilt — fence lines buried, lane markers gone, every edge smoothed over into one surface. Shawn Malone Excavating spends that morning giving the shape back: pushing banks well off the pavement, widening farm lanes and long driveways until two vehicles can pass, and opening the aprons where the county plow left a wall. Room now is room later, since the next band is usually only a day or two out over the water. The walks get shoveled and the glazed patches get salt before the afternoon melt refreezes them at dusk. It is unglamorous work, and it is the difference between a driveway that holds up all winter and one that closes in by February.
