On Route 5 the lake writes the weather itself — some January afternoons the snow comes across sideways and the shoreline is gone inside of four minutes. Evergreen stays ahead of that: driveways plowed, walks opened, ice treated where the wind stacks it into the same corner every storm. In the warm half of the year those same properties get mowed, trimmed and edged, beds mulched, cleanups run start to finish in spring and again in fall. Hamburg and the lakeside stretch below it, kept in order whichever direction the wind is coming from.
