Salt gets into everything out on the North Fork — the air coming off Peconic Bay, the paint on the porches, the grass itself. Sound Side Landscape Construction mows and maintains lawns in and around Greenport village, where the streets run downhill to the harbor and the Shelter Island ferry crosses and recrosses all day long. Summer here is loud and short, so the trimming, edging and cleanups run on a tight clock, wedged between the season's arrivals and the long grey months on either side. A yard that stays sharp through August and then gets put to bed properly in October is the entire ambition. The water is never more than a few minutes off, and the work smells like it.
