From Main Street the whole Genesee Valley opens out below Geneseo, pale and flat in winter, and the wind that crosses those river bottoms reaches the bluff with nothing left to slow it. Solid Scapes plows into that wind — driveways on the streets above the valley, parking areas, walkways cut wide enough for two people to pass, and ice control on the pitches that run downhill toward the flats. Squalls here can lay down an inch an hour and then quit for a while, which is why the work is counted in return trips rather than single visits. There is a particular pleasure in a driveway that is bare while the field across the road is still one unbroken sheet of white. Seasonal accounts are kept open through the storm, not just tidied after it, so the morning starts where it is supposed to.
