Geneseo's side streets are roofed over in old maples, and for about two weeks in October they let go of everything at once. Smith Landscaping is in the middle of that, with leaf clearing in fall, a full raking when the beds come out from under in spring, and mowing, trimming and edging through all the weeks between. By December the same walks and driveways want plowing, shoveling and salt, often before the streetlights have gone off. A village lot cleared curb to door is a small, complete thing. A place looks like itself when the grass is cut and the sidewalks are open, and that is the point of all of it.
