The old rail bed through Franklinville is a walking trail now, running past the village square and out along Ischua Creek beneath the sugar maples that give this county its sweetest week of the year. Summer work follows the same ground: mowing the wide village lots, trimming the creek edge and the guardrail line, edging walks so they hold their shape into September. When winter takes the county back, the plow goes out, with drives cleared, walks shoveled and salt down on the slick spots before the first person steps outside. Cattaraugus County does nothing by halves in either direction. Neither does a driveway open at six in the morning or a lawn cut level in July.
