Fleischmanns lies in a narrow seam of the Catskills, the Bush Kill running through the village and the ridges climbing straight up on both sides. Summer means mowing yards that tilt, trimming along stone walls and creek banks, and keeping the grass in hand where mountain shade holds the damp. Then the year turns and those same driveways become the test, pitched and curved and needing to be plowed early and pushed back wide before the banks close them in. Walks are shoveled and salted, because a step cut into ice is no step at all. It is a good thing to see a hollow road opened and a village lawn cut level between mountains this steep.
