In Fine the green season comes late and gives everything at once, with the Oswegatchie running cold past Wanakena, pines holding the road in shadow, and June arriving all in a single week. Lawns here are clearings cut out of spruce and hemlock, so mowing one means keeping a true shape against the forest edge. Trimming around stumps, stone and root, edging a gravel drive, raking needles out of the grass: close work set inside a very large landscape. By September the light goes long and gold over Star Lake, and the last cuts of the year are the ones you remember. A tidy clearing in the middle of that much woods is worth doing well.
