Snow arrives in Fayette sideways, driven off the lakes and over the ridge in bands that thicken after dark. The work starts near midnight then: headlights, a county road, a driveway that has to be open before anyone needs it. Plowing between the lakes is as much about reading wind as depth, because the flats scour bare while the lee side of a hedgerow builds a drift as tall as a bumper. Walks get shoveled down to the concrete and salted, so the first step out the door in the morning is a sure one. By the time the sky goes gray over Seneca, the drives are open and the day can simply begin.
