In Fairport the day gets measured by the lift bridge going up over the Erie Canal and a boat sliding through beneath it. Suburban Lawn and Landscape Inc works the yards on both banks, along the streets that run down to the towpath and out through the newer stretches of Perinton. Canal air keeps the ground damp, so the grass here comes on early in May and keeps its color late — which means mowing, trimming and edging on a schedule that holds all season. An evening cut in June, with the light still up over the water and the path full of walkers, is about as good as this work gets. Fall closes it out with the leaves, hauled off until the lawn is bare and even again.
