Route 20 across Schoharie County is a beautiful drive eleven months of the year and a serious one in January, when wind comes over the ridge with snow stacked behind it. Nomadic Grease Monkey runs the plow through those nights around Esperance — farm lanes and village driveways opened, banks pushed back off the road edge, walkways scraped and salted down to the stone. Fog off the creek will freeze onto a cleared drive by sunrise, so the second pass counts as part of the job rather than an extra. Headlights, falling flakes and a driveway coming clean behind the blade: there is a rhythm in it that gets into a person. Come daylight, everybody in the hollow can get where they are going.
