Magic Mulch

About Magic Mulch

There is a week in May, right about when Porterville stops smelling like woodsmoke, when fresh mulch goes down and every yard in Elma looks brand new. Magic Mulch chases that week and the whole season around it — mulch delivered and spread, beds edged and cleaned, lawns mowed and trimmed, shrubs shaped back into themselves. Dark mulch against green grass is one of the simplest good-looking things in this world. When the cold end of the year arrives, the same trucks push snow: driveways, lots, walkways, and salt where a slope turns to glass. Two very different materials, one habit of leaving a place tidier than you found it.
