About Maple Lawn Cemetery

Elba's horizon runs long and level, its dark muckland fields reaching toward the sky and rowed with onions through the growing season. Maple Lawn Cemetery is a different kind of field here, a resting place whose grounds are kept as an act of care for those remembered there. Lawn care at Maple Lawn means grass mown short enough that every name stays easy to read, and trimming worked patiently along each row so the whole ground reads as one calm, unbroken green. On a still evening in late spring, with the light lying low and warm across the flat farmland, that kept ground carries a peace all its own. It is mowing as remembrance, work that asks for gentleness and gives back a place of rest.
