Seven in the morning on Bridge Street, the rail yards still cool, dew burning off the lawns while the first mower of the day fires up — that is a July workday for J&J Landscaping. They cut, trim and edge the yards of East Syracuse and the blocks running toward DeWitt, working ahead of the heat and finishing before the pavement gets loud. Summer arrives humid and fast here after a long winter, and the grass takes full advantage; keeping up means a route, a rhythm, and no skipped weeks. The finish they chase is the plain, satisfying kind — a level cut, a straight border, the sidewalk swept so the whole strip looks deliberate. Cleanups round out both ends of the year, from bare spring ground to the last of the leaves.
