Midnight on Long Lane, the potato fields on both sides gone featureless, and the only marks left in the snow are the ones the plow makes. Ed's Landscape Services runs those hours, working out from Stephen Hand's Path into the lanes where the houses sit far back from the road. A long East Hampton driveway is its own small highway, and it needs to be passable before anyone tries it in the dark. Walks are shoveled right to the door, ice treated where the sun won't reach until noon. Then the truck moves on, leaving a clean black line where a driveway used to be.
