The land here was left behind by a glacier: sand and stone shoved into ridges, kettles sunk between them out along Swamp Road, everything draining faster than a lawn would prefer. Earth & Back works with that ground in East Hampton, mowing and edging through the growing months, trimming, bed care, cleanups at both ends of the year. In April the frost heaves relax and the grass wakes unevenly, and a season of patient cutting is what evens it back out. The name holds the two halves of the work, the earth and the back that tends it. By June a yard looked after this way carries a color you can read from the road.
