Snow comes into East Bloomfield out of the northwest off Ontario, and it can bury the drumlins between here and Holcomb in a single overnight. East Hill Excavation runs the plows before the alarms go off, opening driveways, pushing turnarounds back wide, clearing walks, and laying salt where ice sets up hard along the old Route 5 and 20 corridor. There is a particular quiet at four in the morning with headlights on falling snow and nobody else awake. There is also a particular satisfaction in a driveway that is simply open when a family steps out with coffee at seven. Squall after squall, through the long February stretches, the routes get run and run again until the banks stand shoulder high.
