By seven on a July evening the light comes in low along Route 38 and every blade of grass in the village throws a shadow. Dryden Lawn & Recreation, Inc. mows, trims and edges lawns and open green space around Dryden, and handles the cleanups that bracket the growing season at either end. A field cut short with the lines running straight is a small public good — it invites people out onto it. The work runs from the first flush of April growth to the last leaf-heavy pass in November, week after week, in whatever the sky happens to be doing. Come dusk the smell of cut grass hangs over the yards, which is as good a signature as any.
