There are streets in Corning where the sidewalk runs unbroken for blocks beneath old maples, and the lawns beside it get judged, gently, by the line where the grass stops. Mr. J's Lawn Care spends the summer on that line — mowing the panels between walk and porch, trimming tight to the steps and the hydrant, edging until the concrete shows a clean shoulder again. Spring opens with a cleanup, fall closes with one, and in between the route comes around like clockwork. Nothing about it is complicated; it is just done, and then done again next week, which is the only way a lawn ever looks good. On a warm evening with sprinklers ticking, a freshly cut block is a pleasant thing to walk down.
