At three in the morning in February, Salt Road is a tunnel of blowing white and the only warm thing for a mile is a truck cab with the heater running. Cam Services plows through those hours so Clarence wakes up to a driveway already open and a walk already cleared. Come May the same attention turns green — mowing, trimming, edging, the steady weekly rhythm that carries a yard all the way to October. Two very different kinds of quiet, the snow kind and the summer-morning kind, and both are best met early. The reward is a car that backs out without hesitating and a lawn that never gets ahead of anybody.
