Chestertown wakes up in late June, when the camps on Friends Lake and Loon Lake fill and Main Street gets busy again. JCH Construction cuts the grass through that stretch — lake-road lawns, in-town lots, cabin clearings wanting a mow, a trim and a good tidy-up before anyone arrives. Adirondack yards are half lawn and half forest floor, so the work runs to brush edges, needle cover and shady thin spots as much as open turf. Done right, a camp lawn is a place to stand barefoot, with a crisp seam where the grass gives way to pine. Come fall the leaves are cleared and the places are closed up neat for the winter.
