Sandstone walls hold the Ausable in a narrow line through Chesterfield, and the river sound carries up to the yards along the rim road. Apex excavation cuts and keeps those lawns — mowing, string trimming, edging the gravel drives, clearing the brush and leaf litter that gathers at the property lines. Ground here is thin over rock and full of grade changes, which is a mowing problem before it is anything else. What counts is the last look: one height across the lot, true borders at the beds and the driveway, nothing left lying on the stone. It is a good place to stand back and take in a finished job when the light comes low across the gorge.
